3 Day Bwindi Gorilla Trekking Itinerary from Kigali.

Given the time constraints, we routed you through the Cyanika border crossing to the Rushaga sector (southern Bwindi) — it’s the closest sector to Rwanda, about 4–5 hours door-to-door, which is what makes a 3-day round trip realistic at all.

Day 1: Kigali → Bwindi (Rushaga Sector)

  • 6:00 AM – Early departure from Kigali by private 4×4 with driver-guide, heading southwest through Musanze (views of the Virunga volcanoes en route).
  • ~8:00–9:00 AM – Cross the Cyanika/Kyanika border into Uganda (budget ~1 hour for formalities; bring your passport, Uganda visa or East Africa Tourist Visa).
  • ~10:30–11:00 AM – Arrive in Kisoro, then continue to the Rushaga area of Bwindi (~90 minutes from the border).
  • Midday – Check in, lunch, and rest. Afternoon free to relax, short nature walk near the lodge, or optional community/Batwa cultural visit.
  • Overnight: Midrange option — Trackers Safari Lodge or Gorilla Valley Lodge (Rushaga), both comfortable cottages with forest views, around $150–250/night for a double, half board.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking Day

  • 7:00 AM – Breakfast, then transfer to Rushaga Park headquarters for briefing.
  • 7:30–8:00 AM – Ranger briefing, group assignment to a habituated gorilla family, optional porter hire ($15–20, highly recommended for the steep terrain).
  • 8:30 AM onward – Trek into the forest (anywhere from 2–6 hours round trip depending on where the gorillas are). One magical hour with the gorilla family once located.
  • Afternoon – Return to lodge, lunch, shower, rest. Optional: Garama Cave visit or a second short nature walk if energy allows.
  • Overnight: Same lodge in Rushaga.

Day 3: Bwindi → Kigali

  • 6:30–7:00 AM – Early breakfast and checkout.
  • Morning – Drive back to Cyanika border (~90 min), cross into Rwanda.
  • Afternoon – Continue to Kigali (~3 hours), arriving early to mid afternoon — enough time for an evening flight out if needed.

Rough Budget Notes (mid-range, per person, double occupancy)

ItemCost
Gorilla permit (Uganda, standard) low season — April, May, Nov)
Mid-range lodge x2 nights
Private 4×4 transport from Kigali (round trip, shared cost) depending on group size
Porter
Meals are not included in the lodge package
Total estimate excluding international flights

A few practical notes:

  • As of March 2026, individual travellers can no longer book Uganda gorilla permits directly with UWA — you’ll need to go through a licensed Ugandan tour operator, and full payment is now required upfront (no more holding a permit for a week).
  • This is a genuinely tight itinerary — you’re doing two border crossings and a serious trek in 3 days. If you have any flexibility, a 4-day version (with a buffer day) is far less rushed.
  • Rushaga is the only sector offering the Gorilla Habituation Experience (4 hours with the gorillas instead of 1) if that interests you, though it costs more ($1,800 from July 2026).
