Nyungwe National Park

Nyungwe National Park, Chimpanzee Trekking & the Canopy Walk

Tucked into the mountainous southwest corner of Rwanda, along the borders of Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo, Nyungwe National Park is one of Africa’s most extraordinary yet still underrated wilderness destinations. While Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park draws the crowds for mountain gorilla trekking, Nyungwe quietly holds its own as one of the richest rainforest ecosystems on the continent — a place where chimpanzees drum through the canopy, colobus monkeys leap in troops of hundreds, and a swinging bridge suspends visitors 70 meters above the forest floor.

Chimpanzee Tracking and wildlife Safari adventures.

Nyungwe National Park rewards travelers who want depth over spectacle — a place to slow down, look up into an ancient canopy, and encounter primates and birdlife found almost nowhere else on Earth. Paired with Rwanda’s more famous gorilla trekking circuit further north, Nyungwe rounds out a Rwandan safari with a wholly different rhythm: quieter, greener, and every bit as unforgettable.

Overview: Africa’s Ancient Rainforest

Nyungwe National Park covers roughly 1,019 square kilometers of dense Afromontane forest, bamboo stands, rolling grasslands, and swampland. It is widely regarded as the best-preserved montane rainforest in Africa and one of the oldest, having survived the last ice age intact. The forest has existed in some form since long before written record, though it was formally protected starting in 1903 under colonial administration and only gained full national park status in 2004 — grouping it alongside Volcanoes, Akagera, and later Gishwati-Mukura as one of Rwanda’s four national parks.

Geographically, Nyungwe sits at elevations between 1,600 and 2,950 meters, which gives it a cooler, mistier climate than the savannah parks further east. Its position at the source of the Congo-Nile watershed divide means rivers here feed both the Congo and Nile basins — an unusual hydrological distinction that adds to the park’s ecological significance. The drive from Kigali takes around 5 to 6 hours, winding through Rwanda’s famous hills and tea plantations before descending into the misty forest itself.

What Nyungwe Is Famous For

Chimpanzee trekking is Nyungwe’s headline attraction. The park is home to an estimated 400 chimpanzees living in several communities, though only two groups are habituated for tourism, making sightings feel genuinely special rather than routine. Trekking here has a different character than gorilla trekking in the north — chimps move fast and high through the canopy, so hikes can be longer and more physically demanding, but the reward is watching one of humanity’s closest relatives in an untouched, ancient forest.

The Canopy Walkway is Nyungwe’s other signature draw, and it holds a unique distinction: this is the only national park in East Africa offering a full canopy walk experience. The walkway begins near the Uwinka Visitor Centre and leads out onto a suspended steel bridge roughly 70 meters long and hanging about 45–70 meters above the forest floor, depending on the section. Walking across it delivers sweeping views over the forest canopy, distant valleys, and — on a clear day — glimpses toward Lake Kivu.

Primate diversity more broadly is what sets Nyungwe apart scientifically. The park shelters 13 primate species, more than almost anywhere else in Africa, including large troops of Angolan colobus monkeys that can number several hundred individuals moving together through the trees — one of the most spectacular primate sights on the continent. Alongside colobus and chimpanzees, visitors may encounter L’Hoest’s monkeys, grey-cheeked mangabeys, silver monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, Dent’s mona monkeys, olive baboons, vervet monkeys, and the rare, secretive Hamlyn’s monkey.

Birdlife is another reason serious naturalists put Nyungwe on their list. With around 275 recorded bird species, including dozens found nowhere else outside the Albertine Rift, the park is a magnet for birders chasing regional endemics such as the Rwenzori turaco, Regal sunbird, and various forest robins and greenbuls.

Beyond wildlife, Nyungwe is simply one of the most scenic parts of Rwanda — a landscape of forested ridgelines, tea estates in improbable shades of green, waterfalls, and swamps, all wrapped in the cool mountain mist that gives the park its atmospheric character.

Chimpanzee Trekking

Available year-round, chimpanzee treks typically begin early in the morning at either the Uwinka or Gisakura reception areas, guided by park rangers who track the chimps’ movements from where they nested the previous night. Treks can last anywhere from one to several hours depending on how far the community has moved, and hikers should be prepared for steep, muddy terrain. Only a limited number of permits are issued daily, so many visitors combine this with an overnight stay near the park.

Canopy Walkway

A shorter, family-friendly activity compared to chimp trekking, the canopy walk takes around 2–3 hours round trip including the approach hike. It combines a forest walk with the suspension bridge crossing itself, offering a completely different vantage point on the ecosystem — looking down into the canopy rather than up through it.

Colobus and Other Primate Tracking

Separate from chimpanzee trekking, guided walks target the park’s other primate species, especially the Angolan colobus “super-troops.” These treks tend to be shorter and less physically demanding, making them a good option for travelers who want a strong wildlife experience without the intensity of chimp trekking.

Nature and Forest Walks

Nyungwe has an extensive network of walking trails — reportedly over 130 kilometers in total — ranging from short strolls to full-day hikes. Popular routes include walks to the Kamiranzovu Swamp, a rich wetland habitat, and trails leading to several waterfalls within the forest. These walks are led by park guides and often double as birding or botanical outings, given the park’s more than 1,000 recorded plant species, including ancient mahoganies, towering ferns, and a wide variety of orchids and epiphytes.

Bird Watching; Dedicated birding walks, often starting at dawn, focus on the park’s Albertine Rift endemics. Guides familiar with call recognition are available, and the various habitat zones — bamboo forest, swamp, and montane forest — each host distinct bird communities worth exploring separately.

Waterfall Hikes; Several trails lead to waterfalls tucked within the forest, combining moderate hiking with scenic rewards and additional opportunities to spot primates and birds en route.

Tea Plantation Tours; The park is bordered by expansive tea estates, particularly around Gisakura, and many lodges arrange tours through the plantations and processing facilities — a relaxed contrast to the forest activities and a good introduction to one of Rwanda’s key export industries.

Midrange Accommodation Around Nyungwe National Park

Nyungwe’s accommodation landscape spans budget guesthouses, midrange lodges, and high-end luxury properties, with most options clustered around the Gisakura and Kitabi areas near the two main park entrances, and a secondary cluster around Karongi and Kamembe on Lake Kivu, roughly an hour or so from the park itself. For travelers seeking comfort without luxury pricing, the following are among the most established midrange options:

  • Nyungwe Top View Hill Hotel – One of the longest-running midrange properties in the area, perched on a hill near the park with 12 rooms (a mix of twin rooms and apartments with queen beds), self-contained bathrooms, a restaurant, bar, and traditional dance performances some evenings.
  • Nyungwe Nziza Eco-Lodge (Kitabi) – A newer eco-lodge on the eastern side of the park in Kitabi sector, offering wood cottages with modern touches like flatscreen TVs and hot showers, along with panoramic views over the forest, tea plantations, and surrounding hills. It sits close to the buffer zone, making it one of the more convenient midrange bases.
  • Munazi Lodge – Opened in 2025, featuring A-frame units with twin beds and family rooms with convertible sofas, a restaurant, bar, and gift shop — a solid newer addition to the midrange bracket.
  • Rwiza Village – Set on a hillside above Lake Kivu in Karongi district, built in Rwandan traditional style with views over the lake and its islands. A good option for travelers combining Nyungwe with time on the lake.
  • Emeraude Kivu Resort – Located in Kamembe on the shores of Lake Kivu, about an hour from the park, with around 50 rooms, multiple restaurants, a spa, and airport transfer options — a comfortable base for those wanting to pair forest activities with lakeside relaxation.
  • Golden Monkey Hotel – Located in Nyamagabe district, a straightforward midrange hotel with around 28 rooms, Wi-Fi, and dependable service, generally positioned as a functional rather than scenic choice.
  • Mariah Hill Resort – On the shore of Lake Kivu near Karongi town, popular with couples, offering water sports and lake views alongside standard midrange comforts.

For travelers working with a tour operator, most midrange lodges can be booked alongside chimpanzee trekking and canopy walk permits through the Rwanda Development Board, with transport arranged either by self-drive from Kigali (roughly 4–5 hours), shuttle services, or charter flights into Kamembe. Given the popularity of the June–September and December–February dry seasons, early booking is advisable for both permits and accommodation.
