Day 1: Arrival and Transfer to Volcanoes National Park
Your adventure begins with arrival at Kigali International Airport, where a driver-guide will meet you and transfer you to the Musanze/Volcanoes region, a scenic 2.5 to 3-hour drive through Rwanda’s rolling hills, tea plantations, and terraced farmland — often called the “land of a thousand hills” for good reason.
Along the way, you’ll pass through Kigali’s outskirts and into the northern province, with the volcanic peaks of the Virunga Massif gradually coming into view. Depending on your arrival time, you might stop at the Ndaba waterfalls or a local market for a taste of rural Rwandan life.
By afternoon, you’ll check into your lodge near the park headquarters in Kinigi. Options range from mid-range lodges to luxury properties like Bisate Lodge or Singita Kwitonda, many of which offer stunning volcano views. Spend the rest of the day relaxing, unpacking, and getting oriented — your guide will brief you on the following day’s gorilla trek, including what to expect, packing essentials (sturdy hiking boots, gardening gloves, long sleeves, rain jacket, and a walking stick), and the early wake-up call. Dinner and an early night are recommended, since trekking days start before dawn.
Day 2: Gorilla Trekking Day
This is the heart of the trip. You’ll wake around 4:30–5:00 AM for an early breakfast before heading to the park headquarters in Kinigi for registration, which begins at 7:00 AM. Here you’ll enjoy a short cultural performance by the Intore dancers while park staff assign trekking groups — each group of up to eight visitors is paired with a habituated gorilla family based on fitness level and trekking preference.
After the briefing, you’ll be driven to your trailhead, which varies depending on which gorilla family you’re tracking. Volcanoes National Park is home to several habituated families, including Susa, Sabyinyo, Amahoro, Agashya, and Kwitonda, among others, each with its own personality and terrain difficulty. The trek itself can range from 30 minutes to several hours each way, through bamboo forest, stinging nettles, and volcanic mud, climbing to altitudes between 2,500 and 3,000 meters.
Once trackers locate the gorilla family, you’ll leave your walking sticks and bags with porters (highly recommended to hire, both for support and to contribute to the local economy) and approach quietly. You’re allowed one magical hour in the presence of the gorillas — watching silverbacks, mothers with infants, and juveniles at play, often just meters away. Photography is permitted (no flash), and your guide will explain gorilla behavior and family dynamics throughout.
After the encounter, you’ll trek back to the trailhead and return to your lodge by early-to-mid afternoon. The rest of the day is free to rest, enjoy lodge amenities, or opt for a shorter cultural activity such as a visit to the Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village, where you can learn about traditional Rwandan life, dance, and the history of the Batwa community. Dinner at your lodge caps off an unforgettable day.
Day 3: Mount Bisoke Hike
Today shifts from wildlife to volcanology. Mount Bisoke (also spelt Visoke) is an active volcano rising to 3,711 meters, with a stunning crater lake at its summit. This hike is more physically demanding than gorilla trekking — expect 6 to 7 hours round trip, covering roughly 6 kilometres each way, with a steep, often muddy ascent through montane and bamboo forest.
You’ll again start early, with registration and briefing at park headquarters around 7:00 AM. From there, you’ll drive a short distance to the Bisoke trailhead and begin the ascent alongside an armed ranger-guide (a standard precaution in the park, not an indication of danger). The trail winds through dense vegetation, home to golden monkeys, various bird species, and occasionally buffalo tracks, gaining significant elevation as you climb.
The final push to the summit is steep and can be slippery, especially after rain, so trekking poles and good footwear are essential. Reaching the crater rim rewards you with a breathtaking view of the deep-blue crater lake cradled inside the volcano, often shrouded in mist, with panoramic views extending across the Virunga range into neighboring Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo on clear days.
After time to rest, eat a packed lunch, and take photos at the summit, you’ll descend back to the trailhead, arriving back at your lodge by mid-to-late afternoon, tired but exhilarated. This evening, consider a relaxed dinner and perhaps a spa treatment or hot bath, as leg muscles will likely be feeling the day’s effort. Some lodges also offer optional add-ons like a golden monkey tracking experience or a visit to the Dian Fossey tombs at Karisoke, which could be considered as an alternative or addition depending on your schedule and energy levels.
Day 4: Departure
Your final day is more relaxed. Depending on your flight time, you might enjoy a leisurely breakfast, a final stroll around the lodge grounds, or a short visit to a local craft market or cooperative for souvenirs — Rwandan basket weaving, banana-leaf art, and coffee are popular choices.
Late morning or early afternoon, you’ll begin the drive back to Kigali (roughly 2.5–3 hours), timed to connect with your international departure flight. Some itineraries include a brief stop in Kigali for lunch or a visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial, which offers important historical context on Rwanda’s past and remarkable recovery, before heading to the airport for your onward journey.
Practical Notes
Permits: Gorilla trekking permits cost $1,500 per person (Rwanda Development Board rate) and must be booked well in advance, often 3–6 months ahead, especially during peak season (June–September and December–February). Bisoke hiking permits are separate and considerably less expensive.
Fitness: Gorilla trekking difficulty varies by family assigned; Bisoke is a genuinely strenuous hike requiring reasonable fitness. Let your tour operator know your fitness level in advance so they can request an easier gorilla family if needed.
Packing: Waterproof hiking boots, gaiters, rain jacket, moisture-wicking layers, a hat, gloves, insect repellent, and a daypack are essential. Nights and early mornings at altitude can be cool.
Health: Yellow fever vaccination is required for entry, and travelers should consult a doctor about malaria prophylaxis.
