3 Day Rwanda Gorilla Trekking – Volcanoes National Park
The 3 day Rwanda Gorilla Trekking is one of Rwanda’s most affordable short adventure safaris. Day 1 — Kigali → Musanze/Kinigi (Volcanoes National Park)
Your driver-guide picks you up early in Kigali for a scenic 2.5–3-hour drive north through Rwanda’s “land of a thousand hills,” passing terraced farmland, tea and coffee plantations, and rural villages. En route, stop at the Kigali Genocide Memorial for a poignant history lesson, or opt for a coffee/tea plantation break with valley views.
Arrive in Kinigi or Musanze by afternoon, check into your lodge, and relax over lunch — today is for acclimating before tomorrow’s early gorilla trek.
Late afternoon, choose a cultural activity: visit the Dian Fossey statue and museum to learn about her gorilla conservation legacy, or join the Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village for traditional dance, banana beer brewing, storytelling from a former poacher, and local crafts.
Overnight at a mid-range Kinigi lodge — Le Bamboo Safari Lodge, Da’Vinic Lodge, or Mountain Gorilla View Lodge — all comfortable and close to park headquarters.
Day 2 — Gorilla Trekking Day
Breakfast at your lodge runs 5:30–6:00 AM, before a short drive to Kinigi Park Headquarters for the 7:00 AM briefing. Here, rangers assign trekkers to gorilla families based on fitness and group size — a good time to hire a porter (recommended for the economy and the climb) and confirm you have rain gear, gloves, and sturdy boots.
Guided by trackers and armed rangers, you’ll trek into the Virunga forests to find your assigned family — anywhere from one hour to several, depending on terrain. Rwanda’s slopes are generally more open than in Uganda or the DRC, making it a favourite for first-timers. Once found, you get one unforgettable hour with the gorillas: silverbacks resting, mothers grooming young, juveniles playing nearby. Stay calm and quiet, avoid eye contact with dominant males, skip food/drink near them, and keep flash photography off.
Afternoon brings a hot lunch, shower, and rest back at the lodge — many will even clean your muddy gear. Evening is for fireside dinner and swapping trekking stories.
Day 3 — Volcanoes National Park → Kigali (or extend)
Morning: For those wanting a second wildlife encounter, Golden Monkey trekking is a wonderful addition. Like the gorilla trek, it begins with a briefing at park headquarters, but the golden monkey trek is considerably easier and shorter — typically just an hour or two of walking through bamboo forest to find these energetic, acrobatic primates, which are found almost nowhere else on Earth. Afterward, enjoy a hot lunch in Musanze town before hitting the road.
Late morning: Check out of your lodge and begin the scenic 2.5–3 hour drive back to Kigali.
Afternoon: Arrive back in Kigali with time to spare. If you didn’t visit on Day 1, this is a good opportunity to spend a reflective hour or two at the Kigali Genocide Memorial. Alternatively, browse contemporary Rwandan art at Inema Arts Centre, or head to Kimironko Market for colorful fabrics, crafts, and last-minute souvenirs.
Evening: Round off the trip with a farewell dinner in Kigali. Heaven Restaurant, known for its rooftop terrace and Rwandan-inspired fusion menu, or Repub Lounge, a favorite for craft cocktails and a lively atmosphere, are both excellent choices to celebrate the end of your safari.
