Day 1: Arrival in Entebbe

Arrive at Entebbe International Airport, where your driver-guide will meet you and transfer you to a lodge near Lake Victoria. Spend the afternoon relaxing after your flight, or take an optional stroll through Entebbe Botanical Gardens on the lakeshore. Overnight briefing on the days ahead.

Day 2: Entebbe to Lake Mburo National Park

After breakfast, drive roughly 4–5 hours southwest to Lake Mburo National Park, Uganda’s smallest savannah park and the only one with zebra and impala alongside eland, buffalo, and topi. In the afternoon, take a boat cruise on Lake Mburo to see hippos, crocodiles, and abundant birdlife, including African fish eagles and pied kingfishers.

Day 3: Lake Mburo Game Drive to Bwindi

Rise early for a morning game drive in Lake Mburo — one of the few parks where walking safaris are also possible, giving a rare chance to track zebra and buffalo on foot with an armed ranger. After the drive, begin the long but scenic transfer (roughly 6–7 hours) toward Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, driving through the terraced hills of southwestern Uganda. Arrive in Buhoma by evening.

Day 4: Bwindi Gorilla Trek (Buhoma Sector)

This is the highlight of the trip. After an early breakfast, transfer to the park headquarters for a briefing before setting off into the forest with rangers and trackers. Trekking time to reach a habituated mountain gorilla family varies from 1 to 6 hours depending on where the gorillas are that day, through dense, hilly rainforest. Once located, you’ll spend a magical hour observing the gorillas at close range — watching them feed, interact, and move through the vegetation. Afterward, return to the lodge for a well-earned rest, or explore the local Ride 4 a Woman project or Batwa cultural encounter in the afternoon.

Note: Gorilla permits (currently around $800 for foreign non-residents) must be booked well in advance through the Uganda Wildlife Authority, as numbers are strictly limited.

Day 5: Buhoma to Queen Elizabeth National Park

After breakfast, drive north (around 3–4 hours) through the Ishasha sector en route to Queen Elizabeth National Park. If timing allows, stop for a chance to spot Ishasha’s famous tree-climbing lions lounging in fig trees — a rare behavior found in only a couple of places in Africa. Continue to your lodge near the Kazinga Channel for the evening.

Day 6: Queen Elizabeth NP – Game Drive & Kazinga Channel Cruise

Start with an early morning game drive across the open savannah of the Kasenyi plains, prime territory for lions, elephants, buffalo, hyenas, and Uganda kob. Return to the lodge for lunch, then in the afternoon take a boat cruise along the Kazinga Channel, which connects Lakes Edward and George. This is one of the best wildlife-viewing experiences in Uganda, with huge concentrations of hippos and buffalo along the banks, plus elephants, crocodiles, and prolific birdlife including pelicans and African skimmers.

Day 7: Queen Elizabeth to Kibale Forest National Park

After a final morning game drive, depart for Kibale Forest, roughly 2–3 hours’ drive through the scenic Kichwamba Escarpment with views over the Rift Valley. Kibale is home to the highest concentration and diversity of primates in East Africa, including over 1,400 chimpanzees. Arrive in the afternoon and settle into your lodge near Bigodi or Kanyanchu.

Day 8: Kibale Chimpanzee Tracking

Head into Kibale Forest early for chimpanzee tracking. Trekking with rangers through lush tropical forest, you’ll search for habituated chimp communities, hearing their distinctive calls echo through the canopy before spotting them feeding, grooming, or resting in the trees. Along the way you may also see red colobus monkeys, black-and-white colobus, grey-cheeked mangabeys, and various forest birds. In the afternoon, take a guided walk through the nearby Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, known for its birdlife and additional primate sightings, community-run and a great way to support the local area.

Optional upgrade: a Chimpanzee Habituation Experience permit allows a longer, more immersive half-day with researchers as chimps are being habituated to human presence, rather than the standard one-hour visit.

Day 9: Kibale to Entebbe (via Fort Portal or direct)

Depart Kibale for the return journey to Entebbe, a drive of around 6–7 hours depending on road conditions. Along the way, you can stop in Fort Portal for lunch and perhaps a quick look at the Amabere Caves or crater lakes region, dotted with dozens of scenic volcanic lakes. Continue to Entebbe, arriving in the evening for your final night.

Day 10: Departure

Depending on your flight time, enjoy a relaxed final morning — perhaps a lakeside breakfast or a last walk through the Botanical Gardens — before transferring to Entebbe International Airport for your departure flight.

Getting around: Most itineraries like this use a private 4×4 safari vehicle with a driver-guide for the full 10 days, which is the most comfortable and flexible option given the long drives between parks. Domestic flights (Entebbe/Kajjansi to Kihihi or Kasese) can shorten travel time between Bwindi and Queen Elizabeth if you’d rather fly one or two legs.

Best time to go: Uganda can be visited year-round, but the driest months (June–September and December–February) offer easier trekking conditions and better road access, though gorilla and chimp trekking happen in rainforest regardless of season, so some rain is always possible.

Packing essentials: Waterproof hiking boots, gardening gloves (for gripping vegetation on gorilla treks), a rain jacket, neutral-colored clothing, and a good zoom lens for photography.
