2-Day Akagera Wildlife Safari
Discover Rwanda’s wild side on this 2-day safari through Akagera National Park. Tucked into eastern Rwanda along the Tanzanian border, Akagera is the country’s only savanna park and the sole place in Rwanda where you can experience a true game-drive safari. Thanks to the reintroduction of lions and black rhinos from South Africa, Akagera has reclaimed its status as a Big Five park after many years. Expect encounters with elephants, giraffes, hippos, kob, zebra, bushbuck, waterbuck, and more — making this one of our most popular wildlife safaris in the country.
Highlights:
- Daytime game drives
- Boat cruise on Lake Ihema
Day 1: Kigali to Akagera National Park (approx. 2+ hour drive)
Following breakfast at your hotel, your guide will collect you at 7:00 am for the roughly 2.5-hour drive to Akagera (travel time may vary depending on stops). Feel free to pause along the way to photograph the scenery. Once you arrive at the park, you’ll head straight into a short game drive before checking into your lodge for lunch. In the afternoon, set out on a boat cruise across Lake Ihema, where you can spot hippos and crocodiles in the water, along with elephants and buffalo cooling off near the shoreline. Afterward, return to the lodge for dinner and your overnight stay.
Accommodation options:
- Midrange: Akagera Game Lodge
- Luxury: Ruzizi Tented Lodge
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 2: Full-Day Game Drive & Return to Kigali
After an early breakfast, set off on a morning game drive in search of Akagera’s headline wildlife — elephants, giraffes, buffalo, various antelope, plus the park’s reintroduced lions and rhinos. With more than 500 recorded bird species, Akagera is also a top destination for birdwatchers. You’ll bring a packed lunch along for this roughly 5-hour drive, which winds along the scenic lakeshore where wildlife sightings are often at their best. Once the game drive wraps up, you’ll begin the journey back to Kigali, with drop-off at either your hotel or the airport in time for an afternoon flight.
