2-Day Nyungwe Chimpanzee Trekking Safari – Rwanda
If you’re looking for a fitting finale to your Rwandan journey, this two-day chimpanzee trekking excursion into Nyungwe Forest ranks among our most popular experiences. It combines a face-to-face encounter with wild chimpanzees with a walk along a suspended canopy bridge high above the forest floor, all set within the dramatic, hill-strewn landscape that gives Rwanda its nickname as the land of a thousand hills. Compact but immersive, this short getaway packs in adventure, culture, and wildlife in equal measure, leaving you with lasting memories as your time in Rwanda comes to a close.
Day 1: Journey to Nyungwe National Park and the Canopy Walk
After breakfast, check out and head west toward Rwanda’s Western Province — roughly five hours or more of driving. En route, stop in the Southern Province to visit the Royal Palace Museum, showcasing Rwanda’s former monarchy, and the Ethnographic Museum, one of the region’s best for Rwandan heritage. Enjoy a relaxed lunch midway before continuing to Nyungwe National Park. In the afternoon, experience the canopy walk, a suspended walkway offering breathtaking views over one of Africa’s oldest, most biodiverse rainforests — perfect for nature lovers and thrill-seekers. As evening approaches, settle into your lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.
Accommodation Options: Midrange – Mantis Kivu Marina Bay | Mid-luxury – Munazi Eco Lodge | High-end – One & Only Nyungwe House

Day 2: Tracking Chimpanzees in Nyungwe, Then Return to Kigali
Rise early for breakfast before checking out of your lodge and heading into the heart of Nyungwe Forest — a sanctuary that shelters an impressive 13 different species of primates, making it one of the richest primate habitats on the continent. Upon arrival, you’ll receive a briefing from your guides, who will walk you through what to expect, safety guidelines, and forest etiquette before the trek begins.
From there, the real adventure starts: tracking chimpanzees through the dense undergrowth and towering trees of Nyungwe. Once your group locates a chimpanzee troop, you’ll have up to an hour to observe them in their natural surroundings — watching their behavior, social interactions, and movement through the canopy. It’s a rare and humbling opportunity to witness one of our closest living relatives in the wild, unscripted and undisturbed.
Following the trek, you’ll return to the lodge for a relaxed lunch, giving you time to reflect on the morning’s encounter and recharge before the journey back. Afterward, you’ll begin the drive back to Kigali, where the trip concludes either at your hotel for the night or directly at the airport, timed for a late-evening flight departure — whichever suits your onward travel plans.
