Day 1: Kigali – Bwindi (Rushaga sector)
Depart Kigali early, around 9:00–9:30 AM, for the road transfer to Bwindi’s Rushaga sector. This is a long but scenic drive — roughly 6-7 hours covering about 350 km, crossing the Uganda–Rwanda border at Cyanika/Kyanika, then continuing through Kisoro town with striking views of the Virunga volcanoes and Lake Mutanda along the way.
- Stop at the border for immigration formalities (have your passport, yellow fever certificate, and visa/permit documents ready).
- Break for lunch in Kisoro town or at a lodge en route.
- Arrive at your Rushaga lodge by mid-late afternoon, check in, and relax.
- Dinner and an early night, since the habituation trek starts at dawn.
Alternative: fly from Kigali to Kisoro (via a connecting flight, often routed through Entebbe or a direct charter), cutting travel time to under 2 hours, then a short drive to Rushaga. This costs significantly more but frees up Day 1 for rest.
Day 2: Gorilla Habituation Experience
This is the heart of the trip.
- 5:30–6:00 AM: Early breakfast (or packed breakfast) at the lodge.
- 6:30 AM: Report to Rushaga sector headquarters for registration and a briefing from Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) rangers. Habituation groups are capped at four visitors per group per day, so briefings are small and personal.
- 7:00–7:30 AM: Set off into the forest with rangers, trackers, and researchers who are actively habituating the gorilla family. Expect steeper, less predictable terrain than a standard trek, since semi-habituated gorillas move more and cover more ground than fully habituated families.
- Up to 4 hours with the gorilla family once located — observing feeding, nesting behavior, social interaction, and how researchers work to acclimate the group to human presence. This is far more immersive than the standard one-hour trek.
- Return to the trailhead in the afternoon (total day, including the search, can run 4-8 hours depending on where the family is found).
- Certificate presentation back at headquarters, then return to your lodge for a hot shower, late lunch, and relaxation.
- Optional afternoon add-on: a community walk, Batwa cultural experience, or visit to a local village to unwind.
Bring sturdy waterproof hiking boots, gardening gloves, a rain jacket, and a walking stick (available at the trailhead) — the terrain in Rushaga is demanding.
Day 3: Bwindi – Kigali
- Early breakfast and checkout.
- Return drive to Kigali (6-7 hours), retracing the route through Kisoro and the border crossing.
- Arrive in Kigali by early evening, with time for a final dinner or a quick city stop (e.g., the Kigali Genocide Memorial or a craft market) before your onward flight, depending on arrival time.
Permits and costs (as of mid-2026)
- The Gorilla Habituation Experience permit costs USD 1,500 per person for foreign non-residents at present, though pricing has been shifting through 2026 — some operators cite an increase to USD 1,800 taking effect around July 2026, with a further adjustment reportedly planned for January 2027. Because this changes and is set directly by the Uganda Wildlife Authority, confirm the exact current rate with a licensed tour operator before booking, since only 4 slots are issued per group per day and permits must be paid in full to secure a booking (no more “soft hold” reservations).
- Standard gorilla trekking permits (if you prefer the 1-hour version instead) run around USD 800 per person for foreign non-residents.
Mid-range lodge options in Rushaga
- Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge – roughly a 10-minute walk from the Rushaga trailhead; comfortable en-suite cottages with private balconies and forest/hill views. One of the most popular mid-range picks in the sector.
- Rushaga Gorilla Lodge – about 15 minutes from the trailhead, offering self-contained bandas and luxury tents, with an option to pitch your own tent if you prefer.
- Rushaga Gorilla Haven Lodge – set on a hilltop (Ryarutagara) with sweeping views over the forest, a straightforward, welcoming mid-range base.
- Bweza Gorilla Lodge – located right along the Rushaga–Nkuringo road near the park edge, a solid mid-range choice with easy access to the sector gate.
- Gorilla Valley Lodge – close to the Rushaga ranger station, known for its views over the surrounding hills and forest edge.
- Lake Mulehe Gorilla Lodge – a bit further out, overlooking Lake Mulehe with volcano views; a good option if you want lake scenery alongside your forest stay.
Expect mid-range full-board `services including meals, hot showers, and en-suite rooms — a comfortable step below the ultra-luxury lodges (like Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge or Gorilla Heights Lodge) but well above basic options.
A few practical notes
- Book habituation permits well ahead — only 4 permits per group per day are issued across the whole sector, and slots fill up fast in peak season (June–September, December–February).
- Fitness matters more here than for standard trekking, given the longer, steeper distances typical of habituation treks.
- Carry cash (USD) for tips to rangers, trackers, and porters, and consider hiring a porter — it supports the local community and makes the steep terrain much easier.
