Day 1: Travel Day — Kampala/Entebbe (or Kigali) to Nkuringo

Morning: Depart early, ideally by 6:00–7:00 AM, since the drive is long. From Kampala/Entebbe, expect roughly 8–9 hours (about 500 km) via Mbarara and Kabale. From Kigali, the drive is shorter, around 4.5–5.5 hours (approximately 200–230 km) through Kisoro, making Kigali a genuinely attractive starting point for this itinerary if flights or logistics allow.

En route (from Kampala): Most itineraries build in a stop at the Equator crossing near Kayabwe for photos, and a lunch break in Mbarara or Ntungamo. The road is tarmac most of the way, with the final stretch into Nkuringo being a winding, unpaved mountain road — a 4×4 vehicle is strongly recommended, especially in wet season (March–May, September–November).

En route (from Kigali): You’ll cross the Uganda-Rwanda border at Cyanika or Katuna, then continue through Kisoro town, with views of the Virunga volcanoes along the way.

Afternoon/Evening: Arrive at your lodge near Nkuringo by late afternoon, typically between 4:00 and 6:00 PM. Use the remaining daylight to settle in and enjoy the ridge views — Nkuringo lodges are famous for their panoramas over the forest canopy and, on clear days, the Virunga volcano chain in the distance.

Dinner and briefing: Your lodge will usually give a short orientation covering next-morning logistics: wake-up time, what to pack, and what to expect at the trekking briefing.

Overnight: Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking Day

Early morning (6:00–6:30 AM): Breakfast, then transfer a short distance to the Nkuringo park headquarters/trailhead.

7:00–7:30 AM: Registration and briefing with Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) rangers. You’ll be split into groups of up to eight people, assigned to one of Nkuringo’s habituated gorilla families (commonly Nkuringo, Christmas, Bushaho, or Rushegura, depending on current UWA allocations), and given trekking rules — noise discipline, distance from gorillas, photography without flash, and what to do if a gorilla approaches you.

8:00 AM onward: The trek begins. This is the part travelers should mentally prepare for: Nkuringo’s terrain is steeper and more physically demanding than most other Bwindi sectors, with the trail dropping into the valley and climbing back out. Trekking time to reach the gorillas ranges from 2 to 6 hours depending on where the family is feeding that day, plus a return of similar length. Hiring a porter (around $15–20, paid directly, and warmly encouraged as it supports the local community) is highly recommended for carrying your bag and providing an extra hand on steep sections.

Gorilla encounter: Once the family is located, you get exactly one hour with them — watching them feed, interact, and move through the forest at close range. This hour is the heart of the experience and, by nearly universal traveler consensus, worth every difficult step to reach it.

Return trek and lunch: Descend back to the trailhead, typically arriving early-to-mid afternoon. A packed lunch (arranged by your lodge) is usually eaten along the trail or back at base.

Afternoon — Batwa cultural visit or leisure time: Once back at the lodge and rested, you have two good options:

• Batwa Cultural Experience: A visit to a nearby Batwa community, the indigenous forest-dwelling people displaced when Bwindi became a protected park. This typically includes traditional dance, storytelling, demonstrations of forest-based skills like fire-making and hunting techniques, and an opportunity to support the community directly through entrance fees and craft purchases.
• Leisure time: Given how physically demanding the morning trek can be, many travelers opt to simply relax at the lodge, enjoy the ridge views, get a massage if the lodge offers one, or take a short unguided walk around the grounds.

Evening: Dinner and an early night, since Day 3 typically starts with another activity before the long drive back.

Overnight: Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge.

Day 3: Nature Walk and Return Drive

Morning: After breakfast, a shorter, gentler nature walk is often arranged — options include a walk along the Nkuringo trail toward Kashasha River, a visit to a local community project, or a scenic walk to a nearby waterfall, depending on your lodge and guide. This is typically 1–3 hours, much lighter than the previous day’s trek, and a good way to enjoy the forest and birdlife without the intensity of gorilla tracking.

Midday: Checkout and lunch, either at the lodge or en route.

Afternoon/Evening: Long drive back to Kampala/Entebbe or Kigali, following the same route as Day 1. Plan for arrival by early evening if departing promptly after lunch. If your onward flight is early the next morning, consider overnighting in Entebbe rather than pushing straight through, to avoid a very late arrival.

Practical Tips

• Book permits early — as of 2026, UWA requires full payment at booking with no reservation hold, and permits for Nkuringo can sell out months in advance, especially in peak season (June–September, December–February).
• Pack for the trek: waterproof hiking boots, gaiters, long sleeves/pants, gardening gloves (for gripping vegetation), a rain jacket, and a daypack with water and snacks.
• Fitness matters: Nkuringo is one of the more physically demanding sectors, so a reasonable level of fitness — and a porter — will make the day considerably more enjoyable.
• Yellow fever vaccination is typically required for entry into Uganda, so confirm requirements before travel.
