Day 1: Entebbe – Kisoro – Nkuringo (Bwindi Impenetrable Forest)

Your adventure begins early. Aerolink operates a scheduled flight from Entebbe International Airport to Kisoro airstrip, departing at 7:00 a.m. and arriving around 8:10-8:15 a.m., on a light Cessna aircraft. Arrive at Entebbe at least an hour before departure for check-in, and keep luggage light — bush flights typically enforce a baggage allowance (usually around 15kg per person, including hand luggage), so pack accordingly.

The roughly 75-minute flight is spectacular in its own right, tracing the patchwork of Ugandan farmland before the land folds upward into the volcanic peaks of the Virunga region and the deep, forested ridges of southwestern Uganda. As you descend into Kisoro, you’ll get sweeping views of Mount Muhabura, Mount Sabinyo, and Mount Gahinga rising along the borders with Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

On arrival at Kisoro Airstrip, you’ll be met by a driver-guide from Adventure Gorilla Safaris for the transfer into the forest. The drive to Nkuringo takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, climbing through terraced hillsides, banana plantations, and small trading centers as the road winds toward the southern sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. This is one of the most scenic drives in Uganda — expect to stop for photos of the layered green hills often compared to a smaller version of the Rwandan “Land of a Thousand Hills.”

Nkuringo sits on a ridge at the edge of the forest, and Luxury Bwindi Nkuringo Gorilla Lodge is perched to take full advantage of this position, with cottages overlooking the Bwindi forest canopy and, on clear days, views stretching toward the Virunga volcanoes. Check in by early-to-mid afternoon, settle into your cottage, and enjoy lunch. The remainder of the day is free — many guests use the time to relax on their veranda, take a short guided nature walk near the lodge, or simply enjoy the panoramic views with a cup of Ugandan coffee. A briefing on the next day’s gorilla trek is usually given by lodge staff in the evening, followed by dinner and an early night, since trekking mornings start early.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking Day

This is the heart of the trip. Wake early for breakfast before heading to the Nkuringo park headquarters, a short drive or walk from the lodge, for the 7:00–8:00 a.m. briefing. Rangers will divide guests into trekking groups of up to eight people, each assigned to track one of the habituated gorilla families in the Nkuringo sector — commonly the Nkuringo, Christmas, or Bushaho groups, depending on ranger assignments that morning.

Trekking in the Nkuringo sector has a reputation as one of the more physically demanding treks in Bwindi, given the steep terrain and altitude changes, but it’s also among the most rewarding, offering dramatic ridge-top scenery and lower visitor traffic than the northern Buhoma sector. Trek duration varies widely — anywhere from 2 to 6 hours round-trip — depending on where the gorilla family is located that day. A local porter (highly recommended, and an important source of community income) can help carry your daypack and assist on the trail.

Once your ranger locates the gorilla family, you’ll have exactly one hour in their presence — an extraordinary and humbling experience as you watch silverbacks, mothers, and playful juveniles going about their day just meters away. Photography without flash is permitted. After the hour concludes, you’ll trek back down to the trailhead, where a certificate is presented to commemorate your trek.

Return to the lodge by early-to-mid afternoon for a late lunch, a hot shower, and well-earned rest. The lodge’s spa or lounge deck is a good place to unwind, with forest and mountain views as a backdrop. In the evening, dinner is served, often around a fire pit given Nkuringo’s cooler, higher-altitude climate. Optional add-ons for the following morning, such as a Batwa cultural walk or a community visit, can often be arranged with the lodge in advance if you’d like a gentler activity to add texture to the trip — though this itinerary keeps to trekking and relaxation.

Day 3: Nkuringo – Kisoro – Entebbe

After breakfast and a final chance to enjoy the lodge’s views, check out and begin the transfer back to Kisoro Airstrip, again around 1.5–2 hours depending on road conditions. Return flights to Entebbe generally depart Kisoro in the late morning, so plan the transfer to arrive with a buffer for check-in (roughly 30 minutes before departure at bush airstrips). From Kisoro airstrip, Aerolink flights depart around 8:25 a.m., arriving Entebbe near 11:25 a.m., though schedules can shift seasonally and by demand — it’s worth confirming exact times with your operator or Aerolink directly closer to your travel dates, since flights are also weather-dependent given the mountainous terrain.

Practical Notes

• Permits: Nkuringo gorilla trekking permits (issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority) should be booked well in advance, ideally 4-6 months ahead, as availability is limited to eight visitors per gorilla family per day.
• Packing: Sturdy waterproof hiking boots, gardening gloves, long trousers, a rain jacket, and a daypack are essential — Bwindi is a rainforest and trails can be muddy and steep regardless of season.
• Fitness: A reasonable level of fitness is recommended given Nkuringo’s terrain; walking poles are worth requesting from the lodge or park headquarters.
• Currency: Bring US dollars in cash for tipping guides, porters, and trackers, as this is customary and appreciated.

This compact three-day loop makes efficient use of time while still allowing a full, unhurried gorilla trekking experience in one of Uganda’s most dramatic settings.
