Bwindi has four trekking sectors — Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, Nkuringo. Rushaga and Nkuringo sit next to each other in the south, about 1–1.5 hours apart by road, which makes them the only two sectors you can realistically combine without a long re-transfer. Together they give you the strongest silverback concentration in the park:

• Rushaga has more habituated gorilla families than any other sector (groups like Nshongi, Mishaya, Busingye, Bweza, Kahungye, Rwigi), each led by a dominant silverback, and is the only sector offering the 4-hour Gorilla Habituation Experience (GHE) if you ever want to upgrade a trek.
• Nkuringo has smaller, close-knit families (Nkuringo and Christmas groups) with dominant silverbacks in a dramatic, steep-ridge setting — tougher trekking, but very rewarding, intimate encounters.

Doing one trek in each sector on consecutive days, rather than two treks in the same sector, gives you two different gorilla families, two different silverbacks, and two different terrains — the best way to “maximize” the silverback experience within 5 days.

Route & Border Logistics from Kigali

• Border crossing: Cyanika border post (Kigali side via Musanze) — the standard, most efficient route for the southern sectors. Open 6:00 AM–7:00 PM daily, immigration usually quick (often under 30 minutes outside peak periods).
• Kigali → Cyanika: ~115–120 km, roughly 3 hours on paved road through Musanze.
• Cyanika → Rushaga: ~43 km, about 1.5–2 hours on mountain roads.
• Cyanika → Nkuringo: ~2–2.5 hours, similar distance, partly unpaved on the Ugandan side — a 4×4 is recommended.
• Total Kigali → Rushaga/Nkuringo: typically 4–5 hours door to door with a private 4×4 and driver-guide.
• Visa: East African Tourist Visa ($100, multi-entry across Rwanda/Uganda/Kenya within 90 days) is the most convenient option if you’re crossing the land border for a same-trip loop.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1 — Kigali to Rushaga Sector

• Early morning pickup in Kigali by your driver-guide in a private 4×4.
• Drive via Musanze to the Cyanika border, cross into Uganda, continue to Kisoro town and on to Rushaga.
• Arrive early-mid afternoon, check into your lodge, lunch, and rest.
• Afternoon at leisure — short village or coffee-farm walk if energy allows, but keep it light: tomorrow’s trek is physically demanding.
• Overnight: Rushaga sector, mid-range lodge.

Day 2 — Gorilla Trekking in Rushaga

• Early breakfast, transfer to Rushaga park headquarters for the 7:30–8:00 AM ranger briefing.
• Trek assignment to one of Rushaga’s habituated families — the sector’s guides typically try to match groups to fitness level, but expect the possibility of a longer trek given the rugged terrain here.
• One hour with the gorilla family, including the dominant silverback.
• Trek back, lunch at the lodge, afternoon to recover.
• Overnight: Rushaga sector, same lodge.

Day 3 — Transfer to Nkuringo Sector

• Late morning departure (no early start needed) for the short transfer to Nkuringo — about 1–1.5 hours by road.
• Check into your Nkuringo lodge, lunch, afternoon at leisure.
• Optional: short guided village walk or Nkuringo cultural walk, viewpoint over the Virunga volcanoes across the border in DR Congo.
• Overnight: Nkuringo sector, mid-range lodge.

Day 4 — Gorilla Trekking in Nkuringo

• Early breakfast, transfer to Nkuringo trailhead for briefing.
• Nkuringo is known as the toughest sector in Bwindi — steep ridgeline terrain — but the reward is a genuinely intimate hour with a different silverback and family dynamic than Rushaga.
• One hour with the gorillas, trek back (can take 4–8 hours round trip depending on where the family has moved).
• Rest, dinner, relax at the lodge.
• Overnight: Nkuringo sector.

Day 5 — Return to Kigali

• Early breakfast, depart back via Kisoro and the Cyanika border, retracing the route through Musanze to Kigali.
• Arrive Kigali afternoon, in time for an evening international departure or extra night in the city if your flight is early the next day.

Gorilla Permits

• Booking rule change (effective March 1, 2026): Uganda Wildlife Authority no longer allows a “soft hold” on permits — full payment is required at time of booking to secure your dates. Book and pay early, especially for peak months (June–September, December–February).
• Permits must be booked through a licensed Ugandan tour operator; you can no longer buy directly from UWA as an individual foreign traveler as of the same date.
• Each permit includes park entrance, an armed ranger escort, and an experienced guide; it does not include porter fees (recommended, $15–20/day) or tips.

Suggested Mid-Range Lodges

Rushaga Sector

• Gorilla Valley Lodge — comfortable en-suite rooms with private verandas, set on a steep slope with forest views, walking distance to the trekking start point.
• Rushaga Gorilla Camp / Rushaga Gorilla Haven Lodge — solid mid-range options a short drive from the briefing point.
• Four Gorillas Lodge — sits at the upper end of mid-range, close to the Rushaga briefing center, popular for its balance of comfort and value.

Nkuringo Sector

• Nkuringo Gorilla Camp — overlooks the Kashasha River Valley, positioned to access both the Nkuringo family and, if needed, Rushaga families.
• Gorilla Hills Eco Lodge — mid-range, en-suite rooms at the edge of the southern sector.

Both sectors also have upmarket options (Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge, Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge) if you want to mix in one splurge night, but the above keep you solidly in mid-range territory throughout.

Practical Notes

• Fitness: Both sectors involve genuinely steep, sometimes muddy terrain. Nkuringo in particular is considered the most physically demanding sector in Bwindi. A walking stick (usually provided free at the trailhead) and a porter are worth having regardless of fitness level.
• Packing essentials: waterproof hiking boots, gardening-style gloves (for gripping vegetation), long trousers and long sleeves, rain jacket, insect repellent, 2–3 liters of water, energy snacks.
• Best months: June–September and December–February (dry seasons, easier trails); April, May, and November are wetter but quieter and occasionally discounted.
• Currency/cash: Cash is no longer accepted at Ugandan park gates — all permit and park fees must be cleared through your operator in advance.
• Buffer day: If your dates fall in peak season or you want insurance against a rained-out or very long trek day, consider extending to 6 days to add a rest/buffer day between the two treks — not required, but worth knowing the option exists.
