About
6-Day Rwanda Safari: Nyungwe Forest & Volcanoes National Park
This route pairs Rwanda’s two flagship parks — primates and rainforest in the south, mountain gorillas and volcanoes in the north — with a scenic transfer day built in rather than rushed. Given the distances involved (Nyungwe is ~5-6 hrs from Kigali, Volcanoes is ~2-3 hrs), this itinerary flies the Nyungwe leg to keep driving time sane.
Day 1: Kigali → Nyungwe Forest National Park
- Early departure from Kigali (or fly Kigali–Kamembe, ~45 min, then 1.5 hr drive) to save a full day of driving
- If driving (5-6 hrs), break the journey at the Congo-Nile Divide viewpoints or Rwanda’s genocide memorial sites near Nyanza en route
- Arrive at Nyungwe by the afternoon, settle into your lodge
- Evening: sunset walk or relax at the lodge overlooking the forest/tea plantations
Stay: Nyungwe Top View Hill Hotel (Gisakura) — panoramic views over the forest, tea estates, and Lake Kivu; or Nyungwe Nziza Eco Lodge (Kitabi entrance) — newer eco-lodge with hillside views.
Day 2: Nyungwe — Chimpanzee Trekking
- Pre-dawn briefing (~5am) followed by chimpanzee trekking with rangers — treks can run 1-6 hours depending on the group’s location
- Afternoon: rest, or add a guided nature walk near your lodge
- Evening: optional night walk to spot nocturnal species (chameleons, bushbabies, owls)
Stay: Same lodge as Day 1.
Day 3: Nyungwe — Canopy Walk & Primates/Birding
- Morning: canopy walkway (70m suspension walk above the forest floor) — one of only a few in Africa
- Combine with a primate/birding walk — Nyungwe holds colobus monkeys, mangabeys, and 300+ bird species
- Afternoon: visit a nearby tea plantation for a short tour, or relax by the pool
- Overnight in Nyungwe
Stay: Same lodge, or switch to Emeraude Kivu Resort for a lakeside evening if you fancy a change of scenery (about an hour’s drive from the park).
Day 4: Nyungwe → Volcanoes National Park (Musanze/Kinigi)
- Long travel day: either drive back toward Kigali and up to Musanze (roughly 7-8 hrs total via Kigali, so consider flying Kamembe–Kigali then driving ~2.5 hrs to Musanze), or do the full road transfer with a stop at Lake Kivu (Karongi/Kibuye) to break it up
- Arrive in Kinigi/Musanze in the evening, settle in near the park headquarters for an early start the next day
Stay: Le Bambou Gorilla Lodge or Da Vinci Gorilla Lodge — both midrange, self-contained cottages near Kinigi, 10-20 minutes from park HQ.
Day 5: Volcanoes National Park — Gorilla Trekking
- Early briefing at Kinigi Park headquarters (~7 am)
- Full-day gorilla trekking experience — trek time varies (30 minutes to several hours) depending on where the family is located that day; you get one hour with the gorillas once found
- Afternoon: rest, or visit Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village for a taste of local Rwandan traditions and dance
- Note: gorilla permits ($1,500/person as of recent pricing, subject to change) should be booked well in advance through the Rwanda Development Board
Stay: Same lodge as Day 4.
Day 6: Volcanoes National Park — Golden Monkeys or Dian Fossey Hike → Kigali
- Morning: choose between golden monkey trekking (easier, shorter trek, playful primates) or the Dian Fossey gravesite hike (more strenuous, historically significant)
- Late morning: depart for Kigali (~2.5-3 hr drive)
- Afternoon: arrive in Kigali, city tour or visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial if time allows, departure or overnight before your flight

Practical Notes
- Permits: Book chimp trekking and gorilla trekking permits through the Rwanda Development Board well ahead of time — gorilla permits especially sell out in peak season (June–September, December–February).
- Domestic flights: RwandAir or charter flights connect Kigali–Kamembe, which can save significant driving time on the Nyungwe leg.
- Packing: waterproof layers, sturdy hiking boots, gardening gloves (for gorilla trekking’s nettles/vines), insect repellent, and binoculars for birding.
- Fitness: gorilla and chimp trekking both involve unpredictable, sometimes steep terrain — a reasonable fitness level helps, and porters are available to hire at both parks.
