7-Day Rwanda Safari: Nyungwe Chimps, Lake Kivu & Gorilla Trekking

Itinerary Overview

This is genuinely one of the most efficient ways to see Rwanda’s three big draws (culture/history in Kigali, chimps in Nyungwe, gorillas in Volcanoes) without doubling back. The clockwise loop — Kigali → southwest → west along Lake Kivu → north → back to Kigali — means every driving day moves you toward the next activity rather than retracing tarmac. That’s a real strength; a lot of budget itineraries have you bouncing back to Kigali between parks, which wastes a full day each time.

Day 1 – Kigali → Nyungwe Forest National Park. Depart Kigali early morning for the scenic 5–6-hour drive southwest to Nyungwe, Africa’s largest remaining montane rainforest. Stop en route at the King’s Palace Museum in Nyanza or the Genocide Memorial (optional). Arrive in the afternoon and relax at your lodge.

Day 2 – Nyungwe Forest: Canopy Walk & Nature Walks. Morning activity choice: the famous Canopy Walkway (a suspended bridge 70m above the forest floor) or a guided nature walk to Kamiranzovu Marsh. Afternoon: optional chimpanzee tracking or waterfall trail (Isumo Falls). Overnight in Nyungwe.

Day 3 – Nyungwe → Lake Kivu (Karongi/Rubavu). Morning free for an optional early chimp trek, then drive 2–3 hours to Lake Kivu. Afternoon at leisure — boat trip on the lake, visit to Kivu’s islands, or just relax lakeside. Overnight on the lakeshore.

Day 4 – Lake Kivu Leisure Day. Full day to unwind: kayaking, swimming, a coffee/tea plantation tour, or a boat cruise to see local fishing traditions. This is a good buffer/rest day before gorilla trekking. Overnight at Lake Kivu.

Day 5 – Lake Kivu → Volcanoes National Park (Musanze/Kinigi). Drive 2–3 hours north to Musanze via the scenic Congo-Nile Trail region. Afternoon: visit the Dian Fossey/Gorilla Guardians cultural village or Twin Lakes (Burera & Ruhondo). Overnight in Kinigi.

Day 6 – Gorilla Trekking, Volcanoes National Park. Early start (briefing ~7 am) for the highlight of the trip — trekking through bamboo forest and volcanic slopes to spend one hour with a mountain gorilla family. Trek duration varies (1–6 hours hiking). Afternoon relax, or add golden monkey tracking. Overnight in Kinigi.

Day 7 – Volcanoes National Park → Kigali → Departure. Morning drive back to Kigali (~2.5–3 hours). Optional stop at a local market or coffee shop. City tour of Kigali (Genocide Memorial, Kimironko Market) if time allows before your flight, or direct transfer to the airport.
