7-Day Rwanda Safari Itinerary: Nyungwe, Lake Kivu & Gorilla Trekking

This route runs a natural loop: Kigali → Nyungwe (southwest) → Lake Kivu (west) → Volcanoes National Park (north) → back to Kigali — so you’re never backtracking. Rwanda’s best 7-day route: Kigali, Nyungwe Forest chimp trekking, Lake Kivu, and gorilla trekking in Volcanoes NP. Includes permits, timing & buffer-day tips. Day-by-Day Breakdown

Day 1 – Arrive at Kigali International Airport, transfer to the hotel. Afternoon city tour including the Kigali Genocide Memorial (essential for context on Rwanda’s history) and a walk through the Kimironko or Kigali city market. Overnight in Kigali.

Day 2 – Kigali → Nyungwe National Park: Long but scenic drive (~6–7 hrs, 225 km) south through rolling hills, tea estates, and terraced farmland. Consider a stop at the King’s Palace Museum in Nyanza or Butare’s National Museum en route. Arrive at your lodge by late afternoon. Overnight Nyungwe.

Day 3 – Chimpanzee Trekking & Canopy Walk Early start (5–6 AM briefing) for chimpanzee trekking — hikes can range from 1–6 hours depending on the troop’s location. In the afternoon, visit the famous Canopy Walkway, a suspension bridge 70m above the forest floor with sweeping views over the rainforest. Overnight Nyungwe.

Day 4 – Nyungwe → Lake Kivu (Kibuye). Drive north (~3–4 hrs) along the Congo Nile Trail to Kibuye, a quiet lakeside town on Lake Kivu. Afternoon at leisure — swim, relax on the beach, or take a sunset cruise. Overnight in Kibuye.

Day 5 – Lake Kivu Leisure Day. Full day to enjoy the lake: boat trip to Napoleon Island (bat colony) and Amahoro Island, kayaking, or a guided coffee/tea plantation walk along the Congo Nile Trail. This is your relaxation buffer day. Overnight in Kibuye.

Day 6 – Lake Kivu → Volcanoes National Park (Musanze). Drive north along the lakeshore, with an optional stop in Rubavu/Gisenyi, then continue to Musanze/Kinigi (total drive ~3–4 hrs). Afternoon rest and briefing; optionally visit the Dian Fossey exhibit or a cultural village (Iby’Iwacu). Overnight Musanze/Kinigi.

Day 7 – Gorilla Trekking & Departure. Early 7 AM briefing at park headquarters, then trek to find your assigned gorilla family (1–6 hours of hiking through volcanic forest) for a magical hour with mountain gorillas. Afterwards, drive back to Kigali (~2.5–3 hrs) for your evening flight, or add an extra night if you’d like a buffer before departure.

Practical notes

  • Permits: Gorilla permits ($1,500/person) and chimp permits ($100) must be booked well in advance via Rwanda Development Board — often months ahead in peak season (June–Sept, Dec–Feb).
  • Fitness: Both treks involve uneven, sometimes steep terrain at altitude — sturdy hiking boots and a decent fitness level help.
  • Buffer day: Given the drive times, some travellers add a spare 8th day between Kivu and Volcanoes, or fly Kigali–Kamembe to cut the Nyungwe leg.
  • Weather: Nyungwe and Volcanoes are rainforest/highland — pack a rain jacket regardless of season.
