8-Day Rwanda Safari Itinerary: Gorillas, Chimps & Big Five

Day 1: Arrive in Kigali – Then transfer to Volcanoes National Park

Arrive at Kigali International Airport, where your driver-guide will meet you. Depending on flight timing, you’ll either drive straight to Musanze (Ruhengeri), the base town for Volcanoes National Park, or spend a night in Kigali if you land late. The drive to Musanze takes roughly 2.5–3 hours through Rwanda’s “land of a thousand hills” — terraced hillsides, tea plantations, and small roadside markets make this a scenic introduction to the country rather than a dull transfer.

If time allows before dark, consider a short stop at the Kigali Genocide Memorial en route out of the city, or save it for your final day. Check into your lodge near the park in the afternoon, with time to relax, enjoy the mountain views of the Virunga volcanoes, and get an early briefing on the next day’s gorilla trek.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking

This is the centrepiece of the trip. After an early breakfast, transfer to Kinigi park headquarters for a 7:00 am briefing, where trackers assign visitor groups to specific gorilla families based on fitness level and family location that morning. Treks vary widely — anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours of hiking through bamboo forest and volcanic terrain to reach the group, followed by a strictly limited one hour in the gorillas’ presence once found. Porters can be hired locally to carry packs and assist on the trail, which is worth doing both for the support and as a way of contributing to the local community.

In the afternoon, rest at the lodge, or add an optional second activity such as a visit to the Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village for traditional dance and a look at pre-conservation life around the park, or a golden monkey trek if you’d like a second primate encounter (a good option if trekking days are limited to gorillas only for some travellers).

Day 3: Transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park

Depart after breakfast for the long but spectacular drive south to Nyungwe Forest, generally 5–6 hours. Most itineraries route this via Kigali (better roads) or along the more scenic but slower western route skirting Lake Kivu, which lets you stop in Kibuye or Gisenyi for lunch with lake views if you have a flexible schedule. Given the distance, an early departure is worthwhile.

Nyungwe is one of Africa’s oldest and most biodiverse montane rainforests, home to roughly 13 primate species, including chimpanzees, plus over 300 bird species and the famous canopy walkway suspended above the forest floor. Arrive in the late afternoon, settle into your lodge, and get an early night ahead of chimp trekking.

Day 4: Chimpanzee Trekking and Canopy Walk

An early start (often a 4:30–5:00 am departure) is typical for chimp trekking, since the habituated troops move quickly once active. Treks head into the forest from either the Uwinka or Gisakura sectors, depending on where the chimps were last seen, and can range from an easy walk to several hours of steep, humid trekking. Spotting the chimps calling, feeding, or moving through the canopy is a highlight distinct from the calmer gorilla encounters — chimps are far more active and vocal.

In the afternoon, head to the Igishigishigi trailhead for the canopy walkway, a suspended bridge roughly 70 meters above the forest floor with sweeping views over the valley — a good lower-intensity activity after the morning’s trek. If energy allows, Nyungwe also offers waterfall trails (such as the Isumo Waterfall hike) or birding walks for those interested in the park’s exceptional avian diversity.

Day 5: Transfer to Akagera National Park

This is the longest driving day of the trip, roughly 6–7 hours crossing from Rwanda’s southwest to its northeast, often routed through Kigali, where a lunch stop and brief city detour can break up the journey. Alternatively, some operators offer a domestic flight connection between Kamembe (near Nyungwe) and Kigali to cut down driving time — worth asking about if you’d rather save the hours for the parks themselves.

Akagera is Rwanda’s only savanna reserve and a genuine “Big Five” destination since the reintroduction of lions and black rhino over the past decade, with landscapes of open savanna, papyrus swamps, and Lake Ihema quite different from the mountain forests you’ve just left. Arrive in the late afternoon in time to settle in before dinner.

Day 6: Full-Day Akagera Safari

Spend the day exploring Akagera’s game-viewing circuits by 4×4. A full day allows for both an early morning game drive, when predators and grazers are most active, and an afternoon session, plus a boat safari on Lake Ihema — one of Akagera’s signature activities, offering close encounters with hippos, crocodiles, and abundant water birds such as African fish eagles and pelicans.

Game to look for includes elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, topi, eland, and impala, along with a healthy chance of lion sightings and, with good fortune, the elusive black rhino in the park’s rhino sanctuary zone. A picnic lunch in the bush between drives is a nice way to break up the day, and evening drives can also be arranged for those hoping to spot nocturnal species like leopard, hyena, or aardvark.

Day 7: Second Akagera Game Drive – Transfer to Kigali

Enjoy one more morning game drive to search for anything missed the day before, then depart after breakfast or an early lunch for the drive back to Kigali, roughly 2.5–3 hours. Arrive in the afternoon with time to explore the capital — recommended stops include the Kigali Genocide Memorial (if not visited on Day 1), the Kimironko Market for crafts and fabrics, or Inema Arts Centre for contemporary Rwandan art. Enjoy a farewell dinner at one of Kigali’s restaurants showcasing modern Rwandan cuisine.

Day 8: Departure

Depending on your flight time, use the morning for any last-minute shopping or a relaxed breakfast before transferring to Kigali International Airport for your departure flight.

Volcanoes National Park (Musanze/Kinigi area)

Nyungwe Forest National Park

• Nyungwe Top View Hill Hotel — perched on a ridge with panoramic forest views, a popular midrange base near Gisakura.
• Gisakura Guest House (RDB-run) — simple, well-located lodging directly by the park boundary.
• Nyungwe Forest Lodge — a step up in comfort and price but sometimes bookable at moderate rates in shoulder season, worth checking if you want a slight upgrade.

Akagera National Park

• Akagera Game Lodge — the park’s long-established mid-range option, perched above Lake Ihema with pool and restaurant.
• Ruzizi Tented Lodge — intimate tented camp on the lake shore, slightly more boutique but often comparable in price to full-service lodges.
• Karenge Bush Camp — simple mobile-style tented camp for travellers wanting a closer-to-nature, lower-cost stay inside the park.

Practical Notes

• Gorilla permits and chimp trekking permits should be booked well in advance (often months ahead, especially in peak season June–September and December–February), as numbers are strictly limited.
• Pack layered clothing: mornings are cool at altitude in Volcanoes and Nyungwe, while Akagera is warmer and drier.
• Waterproof hiking boots, gardening gloves, and a rain jacket are genuinely useful for both gorilla and chimp trekking, as trails can be muddy and thorny.
• Driving distances in Rwanda often take longer than map distances suggest due to winding mountain roads, so the transfer days are built in deliberately rather than treated as throwaway travel days.

This itinerary can be adjusted — for example, swapping the Kigali-route transfer to Nyungwe for the Lake Kivu route, adding an extra Nyungwe night for birding enthusiasts, or extending Akagera to three nights for a more relaxed pace with additional game drives.
