One-Day Mgahinga Gorilla Trek from Kigali, Rwanda

A same-day gorilla trek into Uganda’s Mgahinga Gorilla National Park from Kigali is possible, but it’s an ambitious 16- 18-hour day involving two international border crossings and forest trekking. Here’s how it typically unfolds.

Before You Go: Essential Prep

Itinerary

• 3:00 AM – Depart Kigali by 4×4. The 150km, 2.5-3-hour drive to the Cyanika border crosses Rwanda’s hilly countryside, starting in darkness and revealing terraced hills and volcano silhouettes at dawn.
• 5:45-6:15 AM – Cross at Cyanika, a quieter alternative to Gatuna/Katuna. Processing takes 20-40 minutes with passport, visa, and yellow fever certificate ready; your driver handles vehicle paperwork.
• 6:15-7:00 AM – Drive through Kisoro town to Ntebeko Gate (45 min-1 hr), the trekking base at the foot of the Virunga volcanoes (Muhabura, Gahinga, Sabinyo), with views spanning the Uganda-Rwanda-DRC borders.
• 7:00-8:00 AM – Register at Ntebeko Ranger Station over coffee/tea. Rangers brief trekkers around 7:30-8:00 AM on rules: a 7-meter minimum distance from gorillas, no flash photography, charge protocols, and hygiene measures. This is also when to hire a porter (recommended) and rent a walking stick.
• 8:00 AM – Trek begins. Groups are capped at 8 people. The Nyakagezi family (9-10 members) is unusual for having multiple silverbacks rather than one. Trackers are already out locating them by radio.

Trek duration varies widely — the gorillas may be just an hour from the boundary, or a 4-6-hour round trip if they’ve moved higher onto the volcano. The route passes through bamboo and montane forest, occasionally opening onto volcanic terrain, with chances to spot golden monkeys, forest birds, and buffalo.

Once trackers locate the family, you leave backpacks and walking sticks with porters and approach quietly. You get one strict hour with the gorillas — a UWA rule protecting them from stress and disease — observing silverbacks, mothers, and juveniles up close, photographing without flash.

The return to Ntebeko takes 1-3 hours, usually arriving between 12:00 and 2:00 PM, when you’ll receive your UWA trekking certificate. Most operators provide a packed lunch, eaten at headquarters or during a brief stop in Kisoro town, which also has public toilets and small shops.

• 2:00-2:30 PM – Depart for the border. Your driver will want to move fairly soon after lunch to stay on schedule and avoid the Cyanika border closing (posts typically operate roughly 6:00 AM-6:00 PM, though hours can shift — confirm with your operator).
• 2:30-3:00 PM – Cross back into Rwanda at Cyanika; the return leg is usually processed quickly.
• 3:00-6:00 PM – Drive back to Kigali, retracing the morning route (2.5-3 hours depending on traffic through Musanze/Ruhengeri and the Gitarama area). Many travellers doze off here after a long day. • 6:00-7:00 PM – Arrive back at your Kigali hotel, capping off a hard but unforgettable day.
